It is always worth taking a more in depth look at rules and restrictions when it comes to an airlines carry-on items policy.

KLM have done an excellent job by deploying a Baggage Calculator check page.

However if you have followed the KLM link from our Airlines Table of Allowances, this will take you to their main ‘Your Included Luggage’ page. Please see that the airline say to check either the booking confirmation, the ticket or what is your online portal with them called My Trip.

It would be interesting to hear from anyone if they have had any experience of the allowance changing from that stated on the website. Does the ticket differ from the online published dimension, size and numbers for carry-on luggage.

What about an oversized cabin bag

The exact wording from KLM covering this is

Large bags that do meet the hand luggage requirements may still need to be checked in at the gate, free of charge, due to limited space in overhead bins in the cabin. Please stow small bags underneath the seat in front of you.

We strongly recommend viewing your baggage allowance in My Trip for KLM flights. Please check the websites of other airlines in your itinerary for their (hand) baggage policy.

Childrens Baggage

Simply put, if a seat has been purchased the child or baby allowance will be the same as any other fare paying passenger.

There are additional rules in place for those under 2 years old.

The exact wording from KLM for Childrens Baggage

Children and babies travelling in their own booked seat may bring the same amount of hand baggage and check-in baggage as an adult.

For a child younger than 2 years who will be travelling on your lap, you may bring:

  • 1 item of hand baggage with baby care items: max. 12 kg (26 lbs) and max. 55 x 35 x 25 cm (22 x 14 x 10 inch)
  • 1 item of check-in baggage: max 10 kg (22 lbs)*

* The Light ticket option does not include check-in baggage for a child younger than 2 years on flights to and from the United States or Canada.

For Cabinbaggers, KLM do a good job in keeping their customers fully informed of the allowances for hand baggage carry-on.

The Baggage Checker webpage is one of the best pages of its kind. Being both simple to use and adding your requirements results in clear precise information given.

KLM also do not charge if you unwittingly arrive and have oversized the cabin bag. Such large items being placed in the hold, which is where they should be.
